Long distance advent calendar: 24 ideas that bring you closer
Long distance advent calendar for couples: 24 ideas built on doing things at the same time. Watch a movie together online, cook over video, send voice memos.
A long distance advent calendar has one job that a normal one does not: it has to create the feeling of being in the same room 24 times, across time zones, train lines or an ocean. Long distance relationship gifts usually try to do that with objects, a pillow, a bracelet, a lamp that lights up when the other one touches theirs. This list takes a different route. It is built on simultaneity: things you do at the same moment, even when you cannot do them in the same place.
The one principle: same time beats same thing
Distance hurts most in the small moments, the coffee you do not share, the film you watch alone. A calendar for two places works when each door fixes one of those moments: today, at eight, we both do this. Agree on a time of day that works in both time zones, and make that the door-opening time for the whole of December. The ritual carries more than the content.
Doors you open together (1 to 6)
- Door 1: a letter, read aloud to each other on a video call, one paragraph each in turn.
- A photo of where you are right now, taken at the agreed time, swapped and kept.
- A question for the call: "What would we be doing today if I were there?"
- A voice memo recorded in the morning, played at the agreed time, not before.
- A song you both press play on at the same second; count down in the chat.
- A sketch of your room, so the other knows where you sit when you talk.
Watch a movie together online (7 to 10)
Watching a film at the same time is the easiest long distance date there is. You need the same film on the same service and a call open on the side; a shared-watch feature in the streaming app helps but is not required. Pick films that give you something to talk about afterwards.
- The film from your first date, with the call running.
- A film neither of you has seen, chosen by a coin toss on the call.
- A series you start together: one episode per door across the month.
- A film from the other person's childhood, with commentary.
Cook over video (11 to 14)
- A cooking video from you, recorded on Sunday; the recipe is tomorrow's door.
- The same recipe cooked at the same time, phones propped on the kitchen shelf.
- The dish from the restaurant where you would go if you were together.
- Breakfast on a video call on a weekend morning, both in pyjamas.
Words and voices (15 to 20)
The strongest doors across a distance are not things but your voice. More ideas, including poems and affirmations, are in the couples' guide: Advent calendar for couples: 24 ideas.
- A chapter from a book, read aloud and recorded, as a bedtime story for adults.
- A 60-second voice memo about what you miss today, specifically.
- A song you play or sing yourself, even with three chords.
- "24 reasons": one a day, the last one on Christmas Eve on the call.
- A video of your day in three minutes: street, desk, dinner.
- Thanks for something they did from far away this year.
Things that arrive in the post (21 to 24)
A few physical doors still matter, especially the big ones. Send them in one parcel before 1 December, each wrapped and numbered, and keep the rest of the calendar digital so the parcel does not have to carry everything. Long distance gifts for him or her that work well here: a scarf that smells of you, the coffee from your corner shop, a printed photo, a voucher for the next visit.
- Door 12: a small parcel door, opened on the call.
- A voucher for the next train or plane ticket, date already chosen.
- A printed photo of the two of you with the next visit written on the back.
- Door 24: the plan for the first day you are together again, hour by hour.
Why digital works better across a distance
A paper advent calendar for a long distance relationship has to be posted, arrive on time and survive customs, and it cannot hold a voice. A digital advent calendar is a link: you fill 24 doors with text, photos, voice messages, videos and vouchers, and the other person opens each door on their phone from that day onwards, no app needed. Both of you can look at the same door at the same time on the call. If you are reading this on 3 December, you can still start today and unlock the first doors together. The AdventJoy home page shows how it works; for the full list of fillers see What to put in an advent calendar: 50 ideas.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good long distance relationship gift idea for Christmas? One that creates shared time rather than another object: a film night at the same time, a cooking date over video, a calendar of voice messages. Add one physical thing to the parcel so there is something to hold.
How do we watch movies together online across time zones? Agree on one slot that works for both (early morning for one, evening for the other is common), use the same streaming service and keep a video or voice call open while watching.
How early do I need to post the parcel? Within Europe, one to two weeks before 1 December; overseas, three to four weeks. Keep the parcel small and put the rest of the calendar online so a delay does not ruin the start.
Can the calendar be opened at the same time in two time zones? Yes. Doors open from the start of the day; agree on a shared opening time so neither of you peeks early.
